Home Opening night for the Sting. The Sting start another season looking for their first memorial cup win. Every season starts with high expectations of your local team. As the crowd filed into the arena you could feel the excitement building. Then came the intro and a puck ceremony that lasted a little longer than it should have and the crowd lost its enthusiasm for a minute as everyone waited for the puck to drop. Lining up against the Barrie Colts, the first period had good chances on both sides but no scoring. The second period is where it started to crumble. A quick period opening goal by the Colts led to deflating the confidence of the Sting and it lead to mistakes starting to pile up. It seemed the players were more interested in making the sweet pass than taking the shot. Poor decisions by a couple of defensemen to try to hold the puck in the offensive zone lead to a couple of breakaways. Justin Fazio, the Sting net minder did his best to hold the game close. The Sting pulled within one just past the mid way point of the third but the Colts came back with an empty net goal to dash the hopes of a win on opening night. It was certainly an entertaining game. I am looking forward to seeing more games this year but I was surprised to see the RBC Centre only two thirds full for opening night.
