Torch Run for Special Olympics

Sarnia Police will be having their annual Torch Run for the Special Olympics today starting at 10:30 AM from Centennial Park.  The runners will proceed southbound on Front Street up to London Road where they will travel eastbound to Indian Road.  The group will then go northbound on Indian Road to Exmouth Street then westbound, ending back at Centennial Park.  Drivers are asked to be patient on this route as runners are escorted for today’s trek.

Sarnia Police would also like to thank LOEWS and Wal-Mart in Sarnia for assisting in Saturday’s toll collection for the Special Olympics.  Totals of the amount collected will be announced at a later time.

Bicycle Education

Your bike is a vehicle.  If you are riding it, you have rights and responsibilities on the road.  You must stop for red lights; you must stop at stop signs; you must stop for pedestrians.  You must ride in the same directions as traffic.  You must stop for school busses when they indicate.  You cannot ride your bike in a crosswalk.  

Sarnia Police will be enforcing bike laws starting the week of May 19th, 2013.

Update: Prescription Drug Collection Day

Sarnia Police are reporting that the Prescription Drug Drop- Off Day was a big success with Oxycodone, Codeine, Hydromorphone and Fentanyl turned in for destruction.  This has a street value of almost $6,000. 

The following is a list compiled by Vice Branch officers who were kept busy counting pills and dumping containers:

144 five milligrams pills of Oxycodone, weighing 75 grams with a street value of about $1,440

428.5 pills of codeine, weighing 187 grams and with a street value of about $2,142

63 pills of various sizes of hydromorphone, weighing 10 grams and carrying a street value of about $1015

11 fentanyl patches valued at $1,375

That does not include the almost 30 pounds of various other types of unknown medications that were dumped in bags that will be sent off for destruction.

Hit and Run Leads to Arrest

Sarnia Police investigated a hit and run collision where a car crashed into a parked truck on Afton Drive in Sarnia on Saturday, May 11, 2013 around 9 PM.  Officers received information from witnesses that occupants of the suspect vehicle fled the area.  A short time later, three males, ages 16, 17 and 20 years of age had been apprehended.

Further investigation revealed that the 22 year old male driver lost control of the vehicle due to speed and wet roads and struck the truck.  There were a total of 5 people inside of the car at the time of the crash.  Another 17 female youth fled with the driver.  A warrant was issued for the driver and he will face a charge of Breach of Undertaking.   He will also face charges under the Highway Traffic Act for Drive No Licence, Fail to Remain and Careless Driving.

The 20 year old who was located by officers after the crash was found in possession of marihuana.  He was later released on a Promise to Appear on charges of Posse…

Update: Bright Street Man Back in Custody

A 45 year old Bright Street man who was arrested in April is once again back in custody for breaching his Recognizance of Bail conditions.   Otto Ted Dira was arrested on Saturday May 11 just before 8 PM at his home.  He was held for bail on three counts of Breach of Recognizance.

The investigation began on May 11 around 2:45 AM when police observed people exiting the accused’s residence.  Three of these individuals were under the age of 19 years.  One of the release conditions was that he not to be in the presence of anyone under the age of 19.  Officers attended the home but got no answer.  The accused could be seen from a window sleeping on the couch.

Police re-attended the house just before 8 PM later the same date and the accused answered the door.   He was intoxicated.  Another condition of the recognizance was that he not consume alcohol.  He remains in custody this morning to await a bail hearing.

Found Money

A good Samaritan in Sarnia has called police reporting some found cash.  The incident happened in Sarnia on May 11 in the evening hours when an officer was flagged down by an employee at a business on Exmouth Street.  The employee advised police a customer found some cash in the business earlier in the day and wanted it to go back to the rightful owner.  It was a significant amount of money that was found.

The customer who found the money was eventually contacted by police.  The customer who found the cash is a 71 year old senior who informed the officer of when, where and how the money was found.  The senior, along with the police would like to return the cash the rightful owner.  Fortunately, there is video of the cash being accidently dropped by the owner at the business where it was found.  Police would like to identify this person and return the money to them.

Bike Safety Education Week

Sarnia Police Service will be educating the public next week on May 13, 14 and 15th on bicycle education and safety in preparation for their annual bicycle enforcement week which is going to be held the week of May 19 to May 25th.  On each day next week, police will remind citizens of various rules of the road for safe cycling and alert the community to bike safety web sites for more information.

Early Morning Cyclist Gets Arrested

An officer on patrol in the area of Euphemia Street this morning around 1 AM spotted a man on a bicycle riding on the sidewalk without a light. The officer pulled up alongside the man in a marked cruiser and asked him to stop. He turned, looked at her and said “No”, continuing on his bike. The officer followed the man who was southbound. He turned onto eastbound Davis Street then onto northbound Forsyth Street. The officer exited the cruiser ordering the man to identify himself and stop. A second officer arrived blocking the cyclist path. He fell off his bike onto a lawn in the 100 block of North Forsyth.

The man attempted to stand up and walk away from the officers. They attempted to take control of the man in order to affect an arrest for Failing to Identify Himself. He began resisting but was eventually hand cuffed. He verbally identified himself and it was learned there were warrants for his arrest out of the Middlesex Detachment of the O.P.P. Hide & Seek

A 17 year old male youth jumped from a third floor balcony yesterday afternoon 11:30 AM in the 800 block of Exmouth Street then left the area on foot. The male youth was now breaching his recognizance of bail on which he had just been released on April 29, 2013. Officers began checking the area for the youth. Conditions of his recognizance were that he could not leave the home without being in the company of his surety which was his 71 year old grandmother.

Just after 1 PM, an officer spotted the youth on Copeland Avenue. The officer told him to stop but he decided to run. The chase was on. The officer continued the foot pursuit and other officers arrived to assist. The accused was located in the rear yard of a home in the 800 block of London Road hiding under a wooden deck. Even after he was ordered to come out, he continued to struggle with the officers.
